A Marathon, Not a Sprint

gooWee turned 3 years old this past October. After many bumps and twists over the first couple of years, we’re starting to hit our stride. We’re getting dialed on what our company is and what it does – if you’re just tuning in, we do website design and web app development. In many ways this progress is a victory and a cause to celebrate, which we have. But by the same token, there’s a subtle peril in becoming comfortable, which we are.

In our first year, we learned the hard way the necessity of hitting the streets and hustling, when we lost our only project. But it wasn’t too late, and when we reached out into the community we found work, and many valuable connections. It was then that we started to grow roots and learned that our community was our soil.

On a related note, it’s a blessing and a curse that we don’t have a physical office. Having 2 or 3 days a week of solitary heads-down time can be a great boon to productivity. But if those days aren’t balanced with some social work and fun, it’s difficult to not become disconnected.

Fun is our first cultural value, and we sometimes stop and ask ourselves if we are having enough of it. There doesn’t seem to be much evidence. Surely we have fun at our monthly meetings at Gravity Brewing. And as old friends, we spend lots of time together outside of work hours, having more fun. The trick, we’re learning, is to document the fun.

With all of this in mind, we’re making a commitment this year (not a resolution), to run a marathon together. We’re both runners, and this aligns with existing life goals. But there’s something added by the fact that we’re running not just as individuals but as a company. We can motivate and push each other in training, as we do every day in our work. And we can share this and celebrate with our community.

We’re super excited and looking forward to hitting the trails. We hope you’ll follow our progress!
